A Review of Pictory for Automated Videos: Can It Work for a Financial Advisory Practice?

You have a dozen great blog posts explaining complex financial topics. You know they’d work better as videos, but you don’t have the time to sit in front of a camera, and you definitely don’t have the $5,000 budget a local video production crew quoted you. So the posts just sit there, not working as hard as they could. This is where tools for creating automated videos enter the picture, and this is my full review of Pictory for exactly this job.

What Most Advisors Get Wrong About Video Marketing

The biggest mistake I see financial advisors make with video is thinking it needs to be a perfect, high-gloss production. They get paralyzed by the idea of buying a fancy camera, setting up lights, and performing for an audience. So they do nothing. This leaves a huge opening for competitors who are willing to just get started.

You don’t need a film studio. You also don’t need to be on camera if you don’t want to be. The goal isn’t to win an Oscar; it’s to communicate valuable information to your clients and prospects in a format they prefer. People watch videos to learn. If you can teach them something about retirement planning or tax-loss harvesting, they won’t care if you used a $10,000 camera or a smart piece of software.

Another trap is overpaying. Hiring a marketing agency to produce a simple two-minute explainer video can cost thousands. For a solo practitioner or a small firm, that’s just not sustainable. You can’t build a real content library at that price. This is why looking at your vertical AI stack is so important; you need tools that give you 80% of the quality for 5% of the cost. That’s the only way to consistently create content without breaking the bank.

A Step-by-Step: From Blog Post to Video in 30 Minutes

I tested Pictory by turning one of my own articles into a video. The promise is speed, so I timed it. Here’s the actual workflow, with no fluff.

  1. Start with Your Script (Your Blog Post). The AI works best when it has good material. I grabbed the text from a 1,000-word blog post about the basics of estate planning. I pasted the text directly into Pictory’s ‘Article-to-Video’ module. It took about 30 seconds for the AI to analyze the text and break it down into proposed scenes.
  2. Review the AI’s Scene Breaks. Pictory does a decent job of identifying sentences that should be on their own slide or scene. It’s not perfect, but it’s a solid starting point. I spent about five minutes combining a few short sentences and breaking up one long, complex one. It’s a simple text editor interface, so this part is easy.
  3. Curate the Visuals. This is the most time-consuming part, and it’s where my main gripe with the tool comes in. The AI automatically searches a library of millions of stock video clips to match the text in each scene. Sometimes it’s brilliant. For a sentence about ‘securing your family’s future,’ it found a nice clip of a happy family. But for a sentence about ‘probate court,’ it suggested a video of a judge banging a gavel in a criminal trial. It was totally the wrong tone. You have to go through scene by scene and swap out the duds. This took me about 20 minutes, searching for better keywords (‘legal documents,’ ‘office,’ ‘planning’) to find more appropriate clips.
  4. Choose an AI Voice and Music. This is the feature I absolutely love. Pictory has a library of incredibly realistic AI voices. They don’t sound like a robot from the 90s. I picked a mature, clear male voice named ‘Matthew’ and it read my script perfectly. You can even adjust the pacing. I also added a subtle, optimistic background music track from their library. This took maybe five minutes.
  5. Add Your Branding. You can upload your logo to appear as a watermark, and set a standard background color or style for your text overlays. I think their branding features are a little basic. You can’t upload custom fonts, which is a miss for practices with strict brand guidelines. But for most, it’s good enough.
  6. Generate the Video. Click ‘Generate’ and wait. For my three-minute video, it took about six minutes to render the full 1080p file. From start to finish, the entire process was just under 40 minutes. The first time will be slower, but once you know the workflow, 30 minutes is realistic.

My Honest Review of Pictory for Automated Videos: Is It Worth the Price?

So, is it any good? Yes, with a major caveat: you are the editor. If you just accept all the AI’s first choices, you’ll get a generic, sometimes nonsensical video. But if you’re willing to spend 20-30 minutes curating the visuals, you can produce something that looks professional and clean.

Let’s talk money. Pictory has a few tiers. The Standard plan is $19 per month (billed annually). The Premium plan, which I used, is $39 per month (billed annually). The big difference is that Premium gives you access to more AI voices and a much larger library of stock video and images from Getty Images. Honestly, the Premium plan is the only one I’d actually pay for. The quality of the Getty library is noticeably better and makes your videos look much more professional.

Is $468 a year for the Premium plan a good deal? Compared to the alternative, it’s a fantastic deal. A single video from a freelance editor on a site like Upwork can easily cost $300-$500. For the price of one outsourced video, you get the ability to make hundreds of them yourself. For a small practice looking to build a content marketing engine, the value is obvious.

The Compliance Question: Staying on FINRA’s Good Side

Using an AI tool for video creation doesn’t give you a pass on compliance. It’s critical to remember that the final output is still considered advertising under FINRA Rule 2210. This means every single video you create must be reviewed, approved, and signed off on by a registered principal of your firm before it ever sees the light of day.

You are also responsible for everything in the video, from the text on screen to the spoken words of the AI voice. The AI won’t automatically add your required disclosures. You need to manually create scenes for your disclaimers, your ADV part 2 information, and any other text required by your compliance department. Finally, these videos must be archived according to the same record-keeping rules (Rule 17a-4) as your emails and other client communications. The tool helps with production, but the compliance burden remains 100% on you and your firm.

But Won’t This Content Feel Robotic and Impersonal to Clients?

This is a fair question. If you put zero effort into the editing process, then yes, it can feel a bit soulless. The AI is a powerful assistant, not a creative director. The personalization comes from your choices.

You select the visuals that reflect your firm’s brand and values. You tweak the script so the AI narration sounds natural. You choose music that sets the right tone. The goal of these videos isn’t to replace a one-on-one meeting with you. It’s to scale your ability to educate. Think of it as a dynamic FAQ section or a visual version of your best blog posts. It’s a way to answer common questions consistently and professionally, saving you time in meetings to focus on more complex, personal advice.

It’s a tool, not a replacement for your expertise.

By handling the top-of-funnel educational content this way, you free up your own time for the high-touch, human interactions that actually build client trust and drive your business forward.

The Real ROI: How Much Time Does This Actually Save?

Let’s do some simple math on creating one educational video per week. The traditional way would involve scripting (2 hours), setting up to film yourself (1 hour), actually filming and doing multiple takes (1 hour), and then editing or coordinating with an editor (4+ hours). That’s at least 8 hours of your time, plus the hard cost of an editor. It’s why almost no one does it.

With a tool like Pictory, the workflow changes. You already have the script from your blog post. The process I outlined above takes about an hour, maybe less once you’re proficient. That means you’re saving at least 7 hours of work per video. If you commit to producing one video a week, you’re saving over 350 hours of work a year. That’s more than two full months of 40-hour work weeks. That’s a real number that has a massive impact on a small practice’s bottom line.
