How to Actually Make a Website With AI (That Doesn't Look Like Junk)

Samet Turan— Editor··8 min read

A step-by-step operator's guide to make a website with AI. Learn the tools, prompts, and debugging process to build a production-ready site, not a demo.

What Most Guides Get Wrong About AI Website Builders

The promise is intoxicating. Type a sentence, get a business website. Most tutorials and vendor demos sell you this one-click fantasy. They show a perfect prompt generating a flawless, customer-ready site in 45 seconds. It’s a lie. Not a malicious one, but a lie of omission. I’ve tried to make a website with AI using this one-shot method dozens of times. The result is always the same: a generic, soulless template filled with vapid marketing copy and uncanny-valley stock photos.

These guides skip the real work. They fail to mention that the AI’s first draft is, at best, a C-minus. It’s a starting point, and often a wobbly one. The output is bland because the input is lazy. Garbage in, garbage out is the fundamental law of computing, and it applies tenfold to generative AI. You can’t just tell it “make a website for a bakery” and expect something with character and a clear business goal.

They also completely ignore the iterative process. The real work isn’t in the initial generation; it’s in the refinement, the content replacement, and the manual overrides. The AI is your intern, not your creative director. It can put boxes on a page, but you have to tell it what to put in them and why. Relying on the tool’s built-in text generator is a recipe for a site that sounds like a LinkedIn post written by a robot.

The Stack: Tools You’ll Actually Use

Forget the all-in-one solutions that promise to do everything. You need a small, focused stack of tools that are each excellent at their specific job. This is the no code AI operator playbook in action: use the best tool for each step, don’t settle for the mediocre integrated version.

  • For Layout and Hosting: Framer AI AI. This is my pick for a few reasons. It generates a solid, responsive starting point, but critically, it gives you a powerful visual editor to fix, change, and completely override the AI’s decisions. You aren’t locked into a rigid template.
  • For High-Quality Content: Your own LLM subscription. I use Claude 3 Opus, but GPT-4 is also a great choice. The models built into website generators are almost always dumbed-down, censored, and incapable of producing sharp, persuasive copy. You need a top-tier model for the words that actually sell your service.
  • For Imagery: Midjourney. Yes, it has a learning curve. But it allows you to create a consistent set of on-brand images that don’t look like generic stock photos. You can control the color palette, style, and subject matter in a way that free generators can’t touch.

Here’s my concrete gripe: I’ve tested tools like Durable, and while it’s incredibly fast for spinning up a landing page to validate an idea, its customization options feel like a straitjacket. After the initial generation, you hit a wall. You can’t just grab a block and move it exactly where you want. For a real business site that needs to evolve, that’s a non-starter. Framer avoids this by giving you full manual control after the AI does its part.

Step 1: The Master Brief – Your Pre-Production Bible

This is the most important step. Don’t skip it.

Before you write a single prompt, you need to create a Master Brief. This is a simple text document that becomes the single source of truth for your entire website build. It forces you to make decisions upfront, and it provides the raw material for every prompt you’ll feed the AI. Trying to make a website with AI without this is like trying to build a house without blueprints.

Your Master Brief should contain:

  • Business Identity: A one-sentence description of what you do. Your target audience (be specific: “homeowners in Austin, TX aged 35-65” not “people”). Your unique value proposition (what makes you different from competitors?).
  • Brand Voice & Tone: List 3-5 adjectives. Examples: “Professional, Reassuring, Direct.” Or “Playful, Witty, Casual.” Find a website you like and copy a paragraph of its text here as an example.
  • Visual Identity: Your color palette with exact HEX codes. Don’t just say “blue and white.” Specify “Deep Navy: #0A2342” and “Off-White: #F8F8F8.” Name your primary font and accent font. If you have a logo, note that.
  • Site Structure: A bulleted list of the pages you need (e.g., Home, About, Services, Contact). Under each page, list the sections required. For example, for the Homepage: Hero with CTA, Services Overview, Testimonials, About Us Snippet, Contact Form. This is your content hierarchy.
  • Core Content Points: For each service or product, write 3-5 bullet points covering the key benefits or features. This is the raw material your LLM will use to write the real copy later.

This document is your shield against generic AI output. It provides the constraints the AI needs to generate something that actually reflects your business.

Step 2: Generating the Skeleton with Framer AI

Now you can finally touch the AI. But you’re not going to use a lazy prompt. You’re going to distill your Master Brief into a dense, specific set of instructions. Open Framer AI and instead of typing “Make a website for a plumber,” you’ll provide something much richer.

Here’s a real-world example based on a brief:

Generate a website for 'PipeMasters', a premium residential plumbing service in Austin, TX. The target audience is affluent homeowners. The tone should be professional, trustworthy, and reassuring. Use a color palette of deep navy (#0A2342), white (#FFFFFF), and a gold accent (#D4AF37). The site needs a homepage with a large hero image, a headline, and a 'Get a Free Estimate' button. Below the hero, add a section for 'Our Services' with three items: Leak Detection, Drain Cleaning, and Water Heater Installation. Follow that with a customer testimonial section and a simple contact form in the footer. Use a clean, modern sans-serif font.

This prompt gives the AI specific, actionable constraints. It knows the audience, the tone, the colors, the structure, and the key content blocks. The result will be a V0.1 skeleton that is structurally 80% of the way there. It won’t be perfect, but it will be a coherent starting point that understands your business goals. It’s the difference between an intern guessing what you want and an intern following a checklist you provided.

Is the Generated Content Actually Usable?

For headlines and body copy? Almost never. The text generated by website builders is optimized for being inoffensive and generic. It’s filled with platitudes like “Quality Services You Can Count On” or “Your Trusted Partner in Excellence.” This copy converts nobody. It’s placeholder text that you must replace.

This is where your dedicated LLM comes in. Take the core content points from your Master Brief and use Claude 3 Opus to write the real copy. For the PipeMasters hero section, your prompt would be:

Acting as an expert direct response copywriter, write a headline and a short 2-sentence sub-headline for a premium plumbing company's website. The goal is to get a worried homeowner to click 'Get a Free Estimate'. The company is called PipeMasters, and they are known for being fast, clean, and professional. Use a confident and reassuring tone.

The output from this will be infinitely better than what the website builder provides. I pay for Claude 3 Opus at $20/month, and honestly, it’s a non-negotiable cost of doing business. The quality of marketing prose it produces is so far beyond the free models that the price is a rounding error for the value it delivers.

Here’s what I do love about the AI’s generated text: it’s fantastic for structural and boilerplate content. It can generate decent placeholder text for three different testimonials, giving you the right shape and length. It can write a generic privacy policy or a basic FAQ section that you can then quickly edit. It saves you from the tedious task of writing the low-impact text yourself.

How to Debug When This Breaks

The AI will make mistakes. Your first draft will have problems. Panicking and trying to fix everything with more and more complex prompts is a rookie mistake (and one that rarely works). Here’s the operator’s approach to debugging the output.

  1. The layout is wrong. The AI put the testimonials above the services section. Don’t write a new prompt. This is why you chose Framer. Just grab the section with your mouse and drag it to the correct spot. The AI’s job was to give you the blocks; your job as the editor is to arrange them perfectly. Use the AI for generation, and the manual editor for refinement.
  2. The images are terrible. The AI-selected stock photo of a “plumber” is a guy in a pristine uniform who has clearly never seen a real pipe. Ditch it. Go to Midjourney and generate your own. Use a consistent prompt structure to maintain a coherent style. For example: photo of a clean, modern kitchen sink with a new chrome faucet, bright natural light, shallow depth of field, minimalist aesthetic --ar 16:9 --style raw. Generate 5-6 key images for the site and upload them manually. This instantly makes the site look 10x more professional.
  3. The brand voice is off. Despite your prompt, the tone sounds stiff and corporate. Again, don’t try to fix this with a global prompt. Go section by section. Copy the headline and body text into your LLM (Claude or GPT) and use a refining prompt: Rewrite this text to sound more reassuring and less like a corporate brochure. Original: [Paste original text here]. This surgical approach gives you fine-grained control and ensures the most important copy on your site is perfect.

The core principle is simple: use AI for the first 80% draft, then use your human taste and direct manual control for the last 20% of polish. That’s how you get a professional result.

You can follow this process to build a solid site from scratch. If you’d rather skip the build and deploy a working version in an afternoon, we’ve packaged this entire workflow, complete with the Master Brief template and advanced content prompts, as an ai automation blueprint in the vault.
