Beehiiv newsletter platform Review 2026: The Brutally Honest Take After 25,000 Subscribers
Short version: Beehiiv is the best platform for creators who want to build a newsletter business, not just a blog. It nails the monetization and growth features that other platforms make you bolt on with third-party tools. But if you need intricate automation sequences, you’ll hit a wall. Fast.
This is my full beehiiv review after paying for it and using it to grow a newsletter from zero to over 25,000 subscribers. I’ve seen what works, what breaks, and what’s just marketing fluff.
Full disclosure: some links below are affiliate links. I only recommend tools I’ve paid for and actually use.
What’s Actually Good: The Built-in Growth Engine
Most newsletter platforms are just glorified email senders. They give you an editor and a send button. Beehiiv is different. It’s built with the assumption that you want to grow your audience and make money from it, and it gives you the tools to do so right out of the box.
My favorite feature, by a country mile, is the referral program. I can’t overstate how much of a pain this is to set up on other platforms. You usually need a separate, expensive tool like SparkLoop, then you have to connect it via API, and hope it doesn’t break. With Beehiiv, you just flip a switch on the Scale plan. You set the rewards (like a digital product, a shoutout, or a free month of premium), set the milestones (e.g., get a sticker for 3 referrals), and it just works. It generates unique referral codes for every subscriber and tracks everything automatically. This single feature has been responsible for at least 20% of my list growth.
The second thing I genuinely love is their approach to analytics. Instead of just showing you opens and clicks, they have a “3D Analytics” view. It shows you email performance, web traffic on your Beehiiv site, and post performance all in one dashboard. Seeing which email subject line not only got a high open rate but also drove the most traffic to my site for days afterward helps me understand what content truly resonates. It connects the dots between the inbox and the blog in a way that’s surprisingly useful.
Finally, monetization is dead simple. You can spin up a paid version of your newsletter in about ten minutes. Connect Stripe, set your prices, and choose which posts are for paid subscribers only. There’s also the Ad Network (called Boosts), where other newsletters can pay to recommend your publication to their subscribers. It’s an easy, low-effort way to get new, high-intent subscribers. I made my first $100 from Boosts without even really trying.
The Annoying Parts: Where Beehiiv Falls Short
It’s not perfect. My biggest gripe with Beehiiv is the automation. It’s just too basic. If you’re coming from a more powerful email service provider like ConvertKit or ActiveCampaign, you will feel handicapped.
Beehiiv offers a simple welcome series, and that’s about it. You can trigger a sequence of emails when someone subscribes. But you can’t build any real logic into it. For example, I wanted to create a sequence that would send a different follow-up email based on which link a subscriber clicked in the first email. This is standard stuff for segmenting an audience based on their interests. In ConvertKit, this takes about 30 seconds to set up with a visual builder. In Beehiiv, it’s impossible. You can’t create rules like “if subscriber is tagged with X AND clicks link Y, then add them to sequence Z.”
This limitation means my audience segmentation is far more manual than I’d like. I have to export lists, use tags manually, and can’t build the kind of personalized funnels that are critical for selling products or courses. It’s a major feature gap, and frankly, it’s the one thing that makes me occasionally look at competitors. If your entire business model relies on complex, behavior-driven email funnels, Beehiiv is not for you.
A smaller annoyance is the editor. It’s a block-based editor that’s perfectly functional, but it feels a bit clunky. Sometimes dragging and dropping blocks is finicky, and the formatting options are adequate but not inspiring. It gets the job done, but it’s not a joy to write in like, say, Ghost.
Is Beehiiv Pricing Worth It in 2026?
Let’s talk money. Their pricing has a few tiers, and the value proposition changes significantly as you go up.
- Launch (Free): This plan is, honestly, a ridiculously good deal. You get up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, and access to most of the core features. For anyone starting out, this is the most generous free plan available from any serious newsletter platform. You can build a substantial audience before ever paying a dime.
- Grow ($49/month): This is the first paid tier. It unlocks custom domains (a must for looking professional), the ability to launch premium subscriptions, and API access. If you plan to make money directly from your newsletter, you have to be on this plan. At $49/month, I think it’s fairly priced for what it enables. Making two premium sales at $25/mo would cover it.
- Scale ($99/month): This is where the magic happens, and it’s the plan I’m on. It unlocks the integrated referral program, the Ad Network (Boosts), A/B testing for subject lines, and survey forms. For me, the referral program alone is worth the $99/mo fee. It’s a growth machine. If you have over 5,000 subscribers and a clear growth strategy, this plan is a no-brainer and provides the best value.
The jump from free to $49/mo can feel steep, but the jump from Grow to Scale at $99/mo feels like a bargain once your list is big enough to make the growth tools pay for themselves.
