Short version: Beehiiv is the best all-in-one platform for serious newsletter operators, but their pricing tiers have clear traps. The free plan is for hobbyists, the Grow plan is the real starting point, and the Scale plan is a big jump you might not need to make.
I’ve been running my main newsletter on Beehiiv for 18 months. I’ve paid for two different tiers, migrated a list onto the platform, and wrestled with its features. This isn’t a summary of their marketing page. It’s a review based on actual usage and credit card statements.

A Breakdown of Beehiiv Pricing Tiers (as of 2026)
Beehiiv keeps it simple with three core plans. There’s an Enterprise option, but if you need that, you’re not reading this review. You have a team to do it for you. For the rest of us, it boils down to these choices:
- Launch Plan: $0/month
- Grow Plan: $49/month
- Scale Plan: $119/month
The subscriber limits are generous on all tiers, which is one of Beehiiv’s main draws. But the features locked behind each paywall are what really determine the value. Let’s look at what you actually get for your money.
The Launch Plan (Free): A Generous Trap
On paper, the free plan looks incredible. You get up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, and a hosted website for your newsletter. For someone just starting out, that sounds like a perfect deal. And it is, for about a month.
Here’s the trap. You can’t use a custom domain. Your newsletter will live at `yourname.beehiiv.com`, which instantly signals that you’re not a professional operation. You also can’t remove their branding from your emails and website. More importantly, you have zero access to the primary monetization tools: premium subscriptions and the referral program.
My take? The Launch plan is a demo. It’s a great way to kick the tires on the editor and see if you like the interface. But it is not a long-term solution for anyone serious about building a newsletter business. The pain of migrating 2,500 subscribers to a new platform (or even just to a paid Beehiiv plan to get a custom domain) is significant. If you have any intention of making this a real project, skip the free plan.
The Grow Plan ($49/mo): The Actual Starting Line
This is where Beehiiv becomes a real tool. For $49 a month, you unlock the features that matter. You can connect a custom domain, remove all Beehiiv branding, and start charging for premium subscriptions. The subscriber limit jumps to 10,000.
This is the plan I recommend to 90% of people who ask. It has everything you need to build a legitimate media business. You get access to audience segmentation, which is crucial for sending targeted content. You can run polls to engage your readers. It’s a complete package.
Beehiiv does take a 5% cut of your premium subscription revenue on this plan, on top of Stripe’s fees. This is pretty standard—Substack takes 10%—but it’s something to factor into your pricing. Honestly, for the functionality you get, $49/mo is a fair price. It’s an investment in a platform that can actually make you money, unlike the free plan which is purely a cost center (your time).
Is the Scale Plan ($119/mo) Worth the Jump?
The price leap from Grow to Scale is significant. You go from about $50 to $120 a month. What do you get for that extra $70? The subscriber limit goes up to 100,000, but the three headline features are the referral program, advanced automations, and API access.
Let’s break these down, because this is where the value proposition gets tricky.
The Concrete Love: The Referral Program. This is, hands down, the best native referral system of any newsletter platform. I used it to launch a growth sprint where I offered a free Notion template to anyone who referred three new subscribers. It worked incredibly well, bringing in over 1,000 new readers in a month. The setup is simple, the tracking is clean, and it’s a powerful growth engine. If your primary goal is rapid list growth, this feature alone can justify the entire cost of the Scale plan.
The Concrete Gripe: The Automations. While Beehiiv calls them “advanced automations,” they feel a bit clumsy compared to a dedicated email tool like Kit (formerly ConvertKit). I tried to build a welcome sequence with a few conditional splits based on what a new subscriber clicked in the first email. The UI was confusing, and debugging why a certain path wasn’t triggering took way too long. It works for simple sequences, but if you’re an automation power user, you’ll feel the limitations. It feels like a feature that was added on, not built from the core.
The API access is great if you’re a developer or want to connect tools that don’t have a native integration. The transaction fee on premium subs also drops to 2.5%, which can be meaningful savings at high volume. But for most people, the decision to upgrade to Scale comes down to one question: will you aggressively use the referral program? If yes, pay for it. If not, you’re likely better off staying on the Grow plan.
